I used to be a teacher and the start of the school year was an exciting time for the teachers as well!
Unfortunately, many parents did not prepare their children to return to the classroom environment. I think that a month BEFORE school begins, parents need to start reducing the time that their children are watching television, assign a book a month for the child to read during the summer, and to give short writing assignments to the child during the summer. Writing skills DO NOT become excellent just by doing classroom assignments.
Parents need to assign work for their own child at home and be educators in the home.
When I ask parents, “how are you educating your child in the home environment?” many black parents have a blank look. I press them with, “are you assigning that they watch documentaries? are you scheduling discussions with them on current events? do you require them to read the newspaper each day and discuss issues with you that are presented in the paper?” MORE blank looks.
It’s NOT just the fault of the school system that black children are not achieving at the level they should be.
